Clearly high end at this price and there’s a a lot going for it but there are reasons for the 3 star rating, so read on before you make a decision.
The subject of voices being too low and music/effects being ear shatteringly loud has been an issue since forever, so the most important thing to state about the JBL 800 is that it will NOT solve this problem for you. There are two modes ‘Purevoice’ and ‘Smart’ which can be switched off and may help things a little bit for you but irritatingly neither can be permanently set to off.
The familiar story of low voices/loud effects problem is the most important to me after all these years of suffering, so I didn’t settle on this system and Amazon were great about accepting it back in its perfect condition. The only way to go from here could be an AV receiver with separate wired speakers or possibly the Samsung Q990C or higher, but both of these options are of course hugely expensive.
The surround speakers really should have been able to be switched on or off by the remote control. I have experienced this feature in the inferior but cheaper system ‘Majority Everest’ so it was possible to include and for something like the JBL 800 which is about 3 times the price, it’s a dreadful omission.
Also, while the magnets keep the speakers nice and secure while they are docked at the soundbar, it is not so easy to get them off again and involves unnecessary wrestling and the feeling that you’re going to be too heavy handed and end up damaging them. Thankfully, like with the Everest, they can be charged with a USB cable so you don’t have the dock them again and can use a plug socket or your computer to charge them up.
Another unforgivable point, going back to the age old ‘quiet voices’ problem is that there is no control over the centre and front channel volumes. You do get 3 volume levels for the rear and 5 levels for the bass (level 1 is powerful enough, 2 is loud and only save 3-5 for when you want to wake up your sleeping relatives or start a fight with your neighbours!) but when it comes to the centre and front speakers you’re stuck, which is a real pity because we all know most of the dialogue comes from the centre channel and it’s a crime that a system of this quality and price doesn’t allow for us to increase it and/or decrease the front channels in order to actually hear what the characters are saying, whilst also attempting to calm down the loud music/sound effects.
The up firing speakers (Atmos) do very little, too but a quick google of atmos soundbars will confirm that this is typical, so don’t expect anything there but they’re not doing any harm so it’s all good.
Now the good points:
It looks great and sounds great. This is where is scores massively over inferior, cheaper set ups. The subwoofer really does add to the bass of the sound with each level instead of just producing a loud thud when there’s an explosion in the video, like the aforementioned Everest’s dreadful sub does, for example.
The JBL 800’s sub is superb, honestly.
It decodes everything and without any sound lag/drift at all. From the start of the video to the end, even if it’s 4 hours, this thing will keep the lip sync perfect right until the end. I say this because the Majority Everest failed on this point, very badly, with my slightly older but still surround sound capable television.
The JBL handles all the codecs such as AC3, AAC, DTS, EAC3 and plays them in fully separated 5.1 channel surround. I have a Fire Stick Lite plugged into it and it goes out to the TV ARC and it still plays all the surround sound codecs through PLEX and without any audio sync issues at all. Other sources connected to the TV HDMI sockets such as DVD/Blu-Ray or your set top box will still play through the soundbar.
Overall, it’s a fairly good system worth considering for its good sound and subwoofer, but do bear in mind it is also one of the least configurable, lacking in many basic options for the price.

Very easy install and gives a great sound. The sub is powerful and the independent speaker design works.

Took delivery of the bar 800 with anticipation and excitement following a renovation of a conservatory wanted something unobtrusive but would deliver good cinema and music sound so following trying the Klipsch cinema 600 which was fantastic (see my other review) for the money lacked surround and Dolby atmos so decided on the bar 800 with detachable surround speakers.
The bar 800 looks good a fair size which almost stretched the length of a 55 inch tv, the functionality was very good with a display of selected source and volume, the detachable battery surround speakers is a great idea as you don’t need separate power to each speaker and they last ages between charges !
The JBL app is really good with eq and enough info to set up easily !
This unfortunately is where the good news ends the most important thing is the sound, which I found to be lack lustre, sound stage was poor, separation of instruments, voices and anything remotely complex ended up muddled and unclear !!. The treble lacked brightness and clarity with most things, also the midrange did not expand or envelope the listener, the bass lacked drive and haughtiness but become overpowering and boomy, there were no issues with loudness or room shaking however it was all abit haphazard and clumsy also the adjustment for the bass could be so much better, instead of going from 1 – 5 with not much change until you go from 4 – 5 ended up being unruly !! As with many manufactures it would be better to have a negative and positive scale to select from !!
The Dolby atmos does work and with separate speakers sounds do wiz’s around you with height effects again I felt abit let down and with the idea other brands would sound better it is shame as I like JBL stuff but the overall sound of this soundbar lets it down !!
I sent the bar 800 back as £650 is a lot of money so I went for a Sonos beam gen 2 and mini sub wow the there is a compete and significant difference in sound between the bar 800 and Sonos all the above issues with the bar 800 have been solved in an even more discrete package, the beam 2 does not even have upward firing speakers and there is better Dolby atmos effects on offer with the Sonos in my opinion !!

After plenty of research I went for the JBL bar 800, and I was not a bit disappointed.
The JBL sounbar has features of other high end soundbars like the bose and the sonos but with a fraction of the price…
The sound bar was very easy to pair with my Samsung QLED Tv via the eARC HDMI connection and it operates as one with the TV, opens and shuts down together, and volume can be controlled from the TV, thus no need to use two separate remote controls.
The TV immediately identified the soundbar as a Dolby Atmos enabled sounds system.
The bar + the bass module + the rear speakers deliver an excellent immersive experience, similar to the high end systems out there.
Yes
I would highly recommend.
